Giants Causeway

Stepping Stones
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet.

The Giant's Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.  The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Northern Ireland Belfast Private Tours

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge was first erected by salmon fishermen over 200 years ago and is suspended almost 100 ft (30 m) above sea level.  It is now a major tourist attraction on the North Coast.

Trace the line of coast over windswept grasslands and winding rocky paths to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge.
As you cross the bridge, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the clear green water and ancient caverns far below.

Will you dare to look down!

Dark Hedges

This beautiful avenue of beech trees was planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century.

It was intended as a compelling landscape feature to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. Two centuries later, the trees remain a magnificent sight and have become one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland.

Titanic Museum

On 31 May 1911, The Titanic slid down the Slipway at the Queen’s Yard of Harland and Wolff and settled on the waters of the Belfast Lough.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, the RMS Titanic was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast.

Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle is set on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park, Belfast, Northern Ireland in a prominent position 400 feet (120 m) above sea level. Its location provides unobstructed views of the city of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The original Belfast Castle, built in the late 12th century by the Normans, was located in the town itself, flanked by the modern-day High Street, Castle Place and Donegall Place in what is now Belfast city centre.

It was his son, The 9th Earl of Shaftesbury, who presented the castle to the City of Belfast in 1934. In 1978, Belfast City Council began a major refurbishment over a period of ten years at a cost of over two million pounds. The architect was the Hewitt and Haslam Partnership. The building officially re-opened to the public on 11 November 1988

Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland, situated in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough.

Besieged in turn by the Scottish, native Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928 and remains one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Northern Ireland.

It was strategically useful, with 3/4 of the castle perimeter surrounded by water (although in modern times only 1/3 is surrounded by water due to land reclamation).

Marshal Schomberg besieged and took the castle in the week-long Siege of Carrickfergus in 1689.

This Castle was also used as a landing point for King William III on 14 June 1690 as he proceeded to defeat King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.
